How to pronounce Burgundy wine names

Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) has the hardest wine list in the world to read aloud: village names with silent letters, hyphenated vineyards and a classification vocabulary of its own. This page covers the regions, villages, grapes and quality terms you will meet on a Burgundy label.

20 terms. Each has native audio, IPA, an easy respelling and the meaning on its own page.

Two rules carry most of the weight. First, the final consonant is usually silent: Meursault ends on “soh”, Pommard on “mar”, Chablis on “blee”, Gevrey-Chambertin on a nasal “tan”. Second, the stress goes on the last syllable of each word, so Puligny-Montrachet is poo-lee-NYEE mohn-rah-SHAY, not PULL-ig-nee MON-trash-et.

The quality terms are simpler than they look: Grand Cru is “grahn KROO”, Premier Cru is “pruh-mee-YAY KROO”. Beaujolais, at the southern end, uses the Gamay grape and its ten named villages are the Beaujolais Crus. The two main Burgundy grapes, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are included at the end.
